Dr. Ashwin Vasan, CEO of Fountain House, on CDC Study: This is a mental health crisis and we need to act.
Failure for political leaders to respond may “make or break our collective recovery”
August 14, 2020 — In response to newly released CDC data on the negative mental health impacts of COVID-19 in the United States, Ashwin Vasan, MD, PhD and President and CEO of Fountain House, issued the following statement:
“For too long, mental illness has been viewed as a solely personal issue to be tackled by the individual, but this is simply not true. Mental health is a public health issue and this study confirms what we’ve long feared: we are experiencing a profound mental health crisis. We need to take the gravity of the CDC’s data to heart by lifting up mental health as an election issue. We need to demand that our political leaders step up with a far-reaching, intersectional mental health plan to address this silent crisis. This will require economic and social relief that can relieve the stress of lost wages, unpaid bills, and virtual learning and expanding access to quality mental health care that goes beyond treatment and examines prevention and ongoing support. The time to act is now. How we respond may be the very thing that could make or break our collective recovery.”
