Fountain Gallery, the premier venue in New York City representing artists with mental illness, celebrated its 10th Anniversary at the annual Celebration of Life Benefit. Each year, the commercial real estate industry and the New York arts community collaborate with Fountain Gallery to benefit its member-artists. Nearly 600 guests gathered on Monday evening, November 15 at Citi Executive Conference Center in Manhattan, where many original works by Gallery artists were sold from among the more than 100 pieces on display. Sasha Nicholas and Steven Caputo served as exhibition curators.
The year's Celebration featured a number of "extras": Fountain Gallery's full-color 10th Anniversary Catalogue was unveiled, as was a new animated version of the Gallery's logo. There was a beautiful presentation of handmade art books created through the "Book Arts Project." A wittily edited video depicted the artists and their work, and a room with fifteen televisions displayed the artists' short videos produced for the "In The Mind" project. A small salon featured scratchboard and collage pieces created through the Studio One art program at Fountain House; these pieces were very popular with collectors. For the first time at this event, members, staff, and our corporate partners promoted the Fountain House Employment Program in a designated "Employment Room."
The 2010 recipients of the Esther Montanez Leadership Award were
- Richard J. Daly, CEO of Broadridge Financial Solutions and a significant employer of Fountain House members through the Fountain House Employment program and
- Dario Gristina, CEO of Genergy, whose generous friendship and dedication have been instrumental in the flourishing of Fountain Gallery and the Celebration of Life Benefit he co-founded.
The Esther Montanez Leadership Award is presented in honor of the memory of the founding director of Fountain Gallery.
Celebration of Life Benefit 2010 was a rousing success, thanks in part to the dedication of the staff and volunteers of Fountain Gallery and Fountain House. Kudos to the Development team for their hard work. As always, we are grateful to our dedicated supporters, and we offer special praise to the gifted artists of Fountain Gallery, without whose talent this magical evening would not have been possible.
