On April 28, staff and members from the Fountain House Education Unit attended the Bronx Community College Annual Health Fair. We were one of many organizations in attendance in the carnival-like atmosphere, offering students health information on a wide variety of physical, mental and alternative health issues.  Cheryl, Adrienne and I worked the Fountain House table, which was set up with posters, flyers and other printed materials. We spoke with students about our working community model, our program offerings, and the application process, and we invited them to come to the agency for a tour.

In addition, we provided assistance to attendees who disclosed they were struggling with mental health concerns, offering them compassion and educating them about available resources, including the Office of Disability Services at Bronx Community College.  If students were clearly ineligible for our services, we offered them the opportunity to connect with us by applying for internships and volunteer roles. We also asked them to share our information with others who could benefit from our services.

The ladies and I had a chance to venture out into the fair, meet with other representatives and exchange information. We collected lots of resources that we felt would be helpful to the Fountain House community. Some organizations gave away bags and other freebies which we brought back to members.  It was fun to spend time with Cheryl and Adrienne, to meet and greet BCC students and to speak with staff from the disabilities office. The health fair organizers even served us lunch, which included my favorite drink, San Pelligrino Aranciata soda! I look forward to attending more events on behalf of Fountain House.
