Fountain House board member Katie Zorn published a moving and eloquent piece about her brother Danny and the College Re-Entry Program in the Huffington Post.

In the column, “Finding Danny: A Sister's Search for Answers to Mental Illness,” Katie wrote about her brother’s struggle with bipolar disorder and his need for community after he left New York University.

“He needed to be with other young adults who understood what it was like to live with mental illness, who valued their education, and would not let their disease impede the progress of their lives. I believe that had such a place existed, Danny would have found his way back to college.”

Fountain House created the College Re-Entry program for people like Danny. Katie and her family have been supporters of the College Re-Entry Program and have established a scholarship for Fountain House members in his name. Her piece highlighted the important role that community plays in the lives of young adults.

“The College Re-entry program provides a community to a group of people who can see in each other not just the diagnosis, but the person beyond it. Like Danny who had felt reduced to the funny guy until he found his place, these young adults are given the chance to look beyond their illness, and see in themselves and each other the gifts they have to offer the world.”
